Senior Engineer - Product Safety

What you will do

As a Senior Engineer, you will be responsible for managing all aspects of vehicle safety and regulatory compliance for domestic and international markets. You will also serve as a technical authority regarding product safety compliance requirements and provide guidance & direction when needed to ensure that compliance is maintained. Also, you will work with other Product Safety investigators / engineers to investigate and evaluate reported concerns for product offerings associated with safety-related components, systems, software, and calibrations.

 

You will be responsible to:

  • Ensure that obligations required to maintain safety compliance are provided accurately and on time (recall, product safety defect determination).
  • Support the Safety Data Analytics Infrastructure program to monitor and ensure safety compliance and communicate results and corrective actions.
  • Ensure that data is processed and accurate for submission to relevant authorities.
  • Assist in facilitating the Product Safety Evaluation Committee to ensure that any items, which need to be addressed, are clearly presented and decisions are made in a timely manner.
  • Ensure that all processes necessary for maintaining legal safety compliance are properly documented and maintained.
  • Represent Volvo to NHTSA, Transport Canada, and DOT/other as necessary and when appropriate.
  • Collaborate with Legal when necessary for accident inspection.
  • Oversee Defect/Recall items and coordinate necessary corrective action. 
  • Occasional domestic travel and possibly international travel may be required.

Product Safety - Complete Vehicle contributes to deliver the right Products & Services to all Volvo Group brand customers according to product segmentation and brand positioning. In Complete Vehicle, we are a team of specialized functions with various responsibilities: Aftermarket technology developing aftermarket solutions for the brands; Features/Verification/Validation breaking down features to technical requirements, as well as verifying and validating products and services; Product Design translating the soul of the brand to a product message; Product Builds delivering all truck and component builds; Special Vehicle Development developing niche products, and Product Safety Certification & Compliance managing all aspects of regulatory product safety and compliance for domestic products, while also cross-collaborating for international markets. In Complete Vehicle, we are close to end customers, understanding their needs and behaviors. Our engaged teams have a holistic view of the entire truck and bring hands-on truck experience. 

Who are you?

The successful candidate will act with authority from the organization to direct and complete such actions as necessary to maintain legal certifications. This position will also strategically serve the company by working with industry associations and regulators on the modification of existing and development of new regulations as associated with safety compliance and compliance procedures. To be successful, this individual should possess an in-depth working knowledge of Volvo’s product offerings, maintenance activities, and safety compliance.

 

Competencies:

  • Integrity: Having trust in the work performed (both internally and externally) is the key to this position.
  • Strong experience working with Heavy Duty Vehicles is necessary.  Medium Duty Vehicles experience is a plus.
  • Communication: The successful candidate must possess strong oral and written communication skills to inform, persuade, and negotiate.
  • Teamwork: Collaboration within the team, with other groups within Volvo, with industry representatives, and with regulators is a must.
  • Ownership / Accountability: Taking the lead in getting the job done and accepting responsibility for personal actions, costs and results.

Requirements:
•    Bachelor of Science degree required: Major in Engineering or related field desired
•    Minimum 5+ years of experience in HD-Vehicle technology
•    Experience working with Government Regulatory Agencies
•    Excellent written and verbal communication skills
•    Excellent presentation and negotiation skills
•    Strong interpersonal, leadership, time management, planning, analytical, critical-creative thinking and problems solving skills
•    Must be eligible to work in the United States
